Newborn essentials

There's so much to think about, it can be overwhelming. Exciting!.. but a lot.

I've put together a little list of 'must haves' that, as a seasoned parent, I've whittled down discarding any of the excess junk leaving behind a short list of delightful necessities.

  • Organic muslin swaddles x 3 (you'll go through a lot due to spew, poo, dirt from impromptu picnics, 'left one attached to the pram or car window' etc etc)
  • Woollen beanie and socks. We love Lamington socks or the charity shop Nanna knitted stash.
  • Merino wool blanket. Your baby has been snuggled up in a warm bath for 9 months. The world is cold out here. A merino blanket will be used from newborn all the way through to a 2-3 years in the bassinet, pram, cot or on you, Mum.
  • Zip up onesies. Don't get suckered in by the snap button styles. They're cute, but they'll bite you in the butt in the middle of the night trying to snap them all up on a wriggly baby.
  • A baby carrier. We love Ergobaby!
  • A change mat and some delightful bassinet/change mat covers to go with. The mat will regularly be soiled. Like, daily. Maybe a couple will be helpful.
  • A pram. We love Mountain Buggy, they suit the Otago terrain really well.
  • A cot that changes to suit a toddler - they last for years! And of course, organic muslin cot sheets x 2. Again, you'll be surprised how often they're soiled and in the middle of the night you want to be able to do a speedy change and resettle.
  • A nice, gentle stain remover. We love Ecostore!

Let's remember, at the end of the day all that little bundle of snoozey, milk-filled joy needs is you. But these things can certainly help!
